From White Belt to Black Belt: Avery Lamb’s 11-Year Jiu Jitsu Journey

In March, Avery Lamb earned his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after more than a decade of training. His story is one of perseverance, patience, and passion for the art. We sat down with Avery to hear about his journey, the lessons he’s learned, and what being a Black Belt means to him.

How It All Began

Avery started his Jiu Jitsu journey 11 years ago when Professor Jason invited him to try a class. At the time, Avery was lifting at Fitworks and wasn’t sure he’d go—until his friend Jon was also invited.

“We promised ourselves that we would try it to see how it would improve our wrestling, and things took off from there.”

That one decision led to a lifelong commitment to Jiu Jitsu.

The Moment Black Belt Felt Possible

Like many white belts, Avery couldn’t imagine ever reaching Black Belt. But when he earned his Purple Belt, his perspective changed.

“When I was promoted to purple belt, I asked myself, ‘Do I really want to put myself through this forever? All the drilling, all the rounds rolling, all the beatings I endured from people better than me… forever?’ The answer came quickly: of course. That was when getting a Black Belt felt certain.”

Challenges on the Path to Black Belt

Patience and honesty with himself proved to be Avery’s biggest challenges.

“There were days I would dwell on bad training sessions, and it only made things worse. I learned to take each day as it is—not better or worse, just what it is. A bad day doesn’t define you as long as you keep showing up.”

That mindset carried him through tough training and setbacks.

Mentors and Influences

Avery credits his growth to the incredible training partners and coaches he’s had along the way, including time spent at Triple Crown, Bright, and Valor, as well as training consistently with Jason and Phil.

“I was fortunate to have so many people show me what it meant to be tough at Jiu Jitsu and the mindset I needed for the long term.”

Life Lessons Beyond the Dojo

For Avery, Jiu Jitsu isn’t just a martial art—it’s a way of life.

“Anyone who knows me will mention Jiu Jitsu when they describe me. All the lessons I learned—patience, time, and consistency—apply to everything in life. Whether it’s my career, relationships, or personal goals, I know showing up consistently is what leads to success.”

Advice for Beginners

When asked what he would tell someone just starting out, Avery emphasized patience and self-acceptance.

“Your journey isn’t parallel to the person next to you. Sometimes others will be stronger, faster, or younger, and that’s fine. The toughest opponent you’ll face is the voice in your head telling you that you’re not good enough. Show up and challenge that voice every day.”

Breakthrough Moments

One of Avery’s first breakthroughs came early on as a white belt.

“I hit my first Scissor Sweep during a roll. It only worked that one time, but it was the first time I felt like I was using Jiu Jitsu instead of just relying on wrestling.”

Moments like these built the foundation for his growth.

Staying Motivated After Black Belt

Earning a Black Belt is a huge milestone, but for Avery, it’s just the beginning.

“I know there are still a lot of people better than me. A Black Belt isn’t the end—it’s a reflection of skill, effort, and my team’s belief in me. I feel a responsibility to live up to that. That keeps me motivated to keep learning every day.”

What’s Next?

Avery plans to keep doing what he loves most—training and improving.

“One day I might focus on leg attacks, another day on back attacks. My plan is to show up, have fun, and help whoever needs it along the way.”

Final Thoughts

Avery Lamb’s journey from white belt to Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu is proof that patience, consistency, and resilience lead to success—on and off the mats. His story is an inspiration for anyone starting martial arts, showing that progress may be slow, but every day on the mat adds up to something life-changing.
