Mastering the Common Armbar from Mount:
BJJ with Jason Nishime
When it comes to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) fundamentals, the armbar from mount is one of the most effective and high-percentage submissions you can learn. In this video, Professor Jason Nishime demonstrates how to set up a powerful armbar using a cross collar grip—a classic technique that works at every level, from beginners to advanced BJJ practitioners.
Step-by-Step Breakdown of the BJJ Armbar Setup
- Start with the Cross Collar Grip
Jason begins by threatening a collar choke from the mount. This forces the opponent to react by defending and grabbing his arm. - Create Space Under the Elbow
As the opponent adjusts, space opens up under the elbow. Jason takes advantage of this by shifting his weight and moving his knee up by the head. - Move into Technical Mount
By sliding his leg under the armpit and raising his knee high, Jason transitions into technical mount. While in this position he maintains strong pressure and control. - Control the Arm
He switches grips, keeping chest-to-elbow pressure to prevent the opponent from slipping free. Placing a hand on the mat helps him shift his balance toward the opponent’s feet, ensuring everything stays tight. - Finish the Armbar
With his weight balanced, Jason swings his leg around, pinches his knees together. He secures the wrist, and then leans back for the clean armbar finish.
Why This BJJ Armbar Works So Well
The beauty of this setup is its simplicity: it begins with BJJ’s common collar choke attempt, which naturally opens the door for the armbar. By keeping pressure tight and using proper body positioning, the submission becomes almost inevitable.
At Nishime Martial Arts, students learn not just BJJ techniques, but the why behind them. They learn how to read reactions, control space, and finish with confidence.
