Martial artists from across the country gathered this October to train in Yamanni-Ryu Kobudo under Hanshi Kiyoshi Nishime. From advanced instructor sessions to black belt testing and seminars in both Cincinnati and Groton, CT, students deepened their skill and spirit in traditional Okinawan weapons training.
Advanced Weapon Training Weekend: October 3–5
The first weekend of October brought together martial arts instructors from across the United States for an intensive three-day Yamanni training session led by Hanshi Kiyoshi Nishime.
On Friday, October 3, senior instructors gathered for advanced weapon training. They focused on refining the precision, rhythm, and flow that define traditional Okinawan Kobudo. Through detailed instruction and partner drills, participants deepened their understanding of weapon transitions, distance control, and traditional kata application.
On Saturday, the dojo welcomed martial arts students of all levels for a full day of instruction in bo, sai, kama, and kumibo (bo vs. bo sparring). Energy filled the floor as participants trained side by side, with beginners building a strong foundation and advanced students polishing technique under Hanshi Nishime’s guidance.
The weekend concluded on Sunday with an inspiring black belt examination. Twelve students earned new ranks in Yamanni-Ryu Kobudo, demonstrating both technical skill and dedication to preserving the art. Their success reflects the spirit of perseverance and respect that martial arts represents.

Groton, Connecticut Yamanni-Ryu Seminar: October 12
Just one week later, on October 12, martial artists from across the East Coast gathered in Groton, Connecticut for another memorable seminar with Hanshi Nishime.
Despite challenging weather conditions, participants made the trip to continue their study of Okinawan weapons and to experience Hanshi Nishime’s direct instruction. Through focused training in bo, sai, kama, and tonfa, attendees refined their movement, timing, and spirit while bringing the traditional art of Okinawan weapons to life once again.
